Academic Rigor for All

Leveraging a playbook to move every student to mastery.

As leadership coaches, one of the fundamental exercises we do with the principals and principal supervisors is to create Playbooks.

The power of a Playbook is that it sharpens each team’s focus. In just a few pages, a Playbook captures what, when, and how a leader and her  team will address their instructional and school culture priorities at each point in the year.

In this guide, we explore how principal Jamila Hammett uses a Playbook to improve academic rigor in all her classrooms. She identifies the skills, observes teachers, and plans PD so her teachers have what they need to create high-quality lesson plans, engage and support students through "productive struggle" with key concepts, and respond to student error. The Plan, Act, Revise cycle keeps her actions fresh and relevant.

Through examples, self-assessment questions, and usable tools, this guide will give you actionable steps to create your own Playbook and elevate the academic rigor in every classroom.
