 Relay’s academic calendar and program structure are designed to accommodate the demanding schedules of candidates who hold full-time positions in schools. We deliver about 40% of the content online and 60% in person so that candidates have flexibility to complete large portions of the coursework when it is most convenient for their schedules.

  • In addition to online coursework, teachers will attend regular in-person sessions, including:
  • A one-week summer session prior to the start of the school year;
  • Weekly weeknight sessions for core and subject-specific instruction; and
  • One to Two Saturday sessions per term

The Philadelphia & Camden Graduate Alternate Route Certification Program has three terms (summer, fall, and spring) in Pennsylvania and six terms in New Jersey

In addition to the standard Teaching Certification admissions and certification requirements, participants in the Philadelphia & Camden Graduate Alternate Route program must meet the following campus-specific admissions and certification requirements.

A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required for regular admission.

  • Applicants with a GPA lower than 3.0 but at least 2.8 for Philadelphia teachers, and at least 2.75 for Camden teachers, may be considered for admission by submitting an additional letter of recommendation that explains their qualifications for admission to Relay. In New Jersey, teachers with a GPA below 2.75 are not eligible to be certified by the state.
  • Non-Matriculation Status: Applicants from the state of Pennsylvania whose degree-conferred undergraduate transcript reflects a GPA of less than 2.8 in Pennsylvania, but of at least 2.5, will not be considered for regular admissions, but may be considered for non-matriculated enrollment. Learn more about non-matriculated status.

The Relay Philadelphia & Camden Graduate Alternate Route Certification program provides a pathway for alternate route licensure. Eligible applicants who are not licensed as teachers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey may receive a Pennsylvania Instructional I Certificate or a New Jersey Standard Teaching Certificate by completing this program and satisfying additional certification requirements. Graduate students pursuing alternate route certification complete the same coursework as those not pursuing licensure.

Download the Relay Philadelphia & Camden Pennsylvania Certification Highlights Guide or New Jersey Certification Higlights Guide for information about certification requirements and a timeline of key milestones.

Please note that certification steps occur prior to admission, during the program, and upon completion of the program. This information is important! Failure to pass licensure exams and meet other certification criteria may result in loss of your teaching position and/or removal from the Philadelphia & Camden Graduate Alternate Route Certification program.
