The Relay Teaching Residency: Dallas-Fort Worth is a two-year program that includes an apprentice year, a master’s degree, and recommendation for a Texas Standard Certificate. Dallas-Fort Worth is a high-priority Relay campus with an urgent need for diverse, dedicated teachers, and Relay Dallas-Fort Worth offers qualified applicants support finding a local PK-12 school position through the Residency School Placement program.

*The Relay Teaching Residency is an AmeriCorps program. Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards further reduce the out-of-pocket cost of tuition for Residents. All Residents are expected to apply for AmeriCorps, regardless of prior AmeriCorps service. Residents must submit all paperwork to be eligible for the discounted tuition price of $8,000.

The Relay Teaching Residency is a 36 credit hour program. Relay’s academic calendar and program structure are designed to accommodate the demanding schedules of graduate students who hold full-time positions in schools. We deliver about 40% of the content online and 60% in person so that graduate students have flexibility to complete large portions of the coursework when it is most convenient for their schedules.
In addition to online coursework, teachers will attend regular in-person sessions, including:
- A two-week summer session before the first year of the program;
- A two-week summer session between the first and second years of the program;
- Two weeknight sessions each month, for core instruction;
- One Saturday session each month OR two weeknights each month, for instruction specific to grade levels and subjects; and
- During the first year, a weekly 3-4 hour deliberate practice session with Relay faculty in which residents have additional time to rehearse core techniques they are learning in the program.
Relay has three terms each year (summer, fall, and spring).
RELAY DALLAS-FORT WORTH ADMISSIONS & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the standard Relay Teaching Residency admissions and certification requirements, participants in the Relay Teaching Residency: Dallas-Fort Worth program must meet the following campus-specific admissions and licensure requirements.
Relay Dallas-Fort Worth works closely with some of the strongest public district schools and charter networks in Dallas and Fort Worth to support teaching residents. Relay Dallas-Fort Worth participates in the Residency School Placement program, working with Relay’s national recruiters to help qualified applicants find resident positions at partner PK-12 DFW schools. Applicants to the Relay Teaching Residency: Dallas-Fort Worth must submit a degree-conferred undergraduate transcript from an accredited institution of higher education. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) provides a list of recognized accrediting agencies.
Applicants who attended any educational institutions outside of the United States must submit an official hard copy transcript in the institution’s sealed envelope to Relay AND submit a course-by-course conversion of the international transcript translated into the American system by a foreign credential evaluation service recognized by the Texas Education Authority (TEA). The TEA provides a list of recognized evaluators on their website. Eligible graduate students will pursue certification through Relay Graduate School of Education’s Texas Alternative Certification Program. Eligible applicants may receive a Texas Standard Certificate by completing this program and satisfying additional certification requirements.

The Relay Graduate School of Education Texas Alternative Certification Program was approved by the State Board for Educator Certification on August 4, 2014 and was granted a status of “Accredited - Approved” for the 2015-16 reporting year. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) conducts a national criminal history check on all applicants for certification. Applicants for certification who have a conviction or deferred adjudication for a felony or misdemeanor offense may be ineligible for issuance of a certificate on completion of an educator preparation program.
