Relay Teaching Residency

The Relay Teaching Residency (RTR) believes that great teachers are made, not born. Through strategic coaching, ample practice, and a curriculum built to match classroom experiences, Residents are prepared to join the most important profession in the world.

In this video, explore how college graduates are launching their teaching careers in this powerful pathway to the classroom.

Program Overview

The Relay Teaching Residency is the best way to begin a career in teaching and earn while you learn. You’ll participate in a supportive preparation program, earn a teaching credential, complete a master’s degree, and get help finding a meaningful career in just two years — all at an extremely affordable price.

Why teach?

Teaching is the world’s greatest profession. Teachers shape young minds and build the future. They inspire curiosity and help children reach their potential. All across the country — and particularly in traditionally under-served communities — parents and leaders are clamoring for dedicated individuals who can help create new possibilities for the next generation. You can be one of those change agents: empowering America’s most deserving communities, while building your leadership and professional skills to shape your future.

Why the Relay Teaching Residency?

We took everything we could think of that new teachers want and need and put it into one program when we designed the Relay Teaching Residency. The two-year program is delivered by outstanding faculty with impressive track records of success in PK-12 classrooms whose number one objective is to support you in becoming the teacher you want to be. They work tirelessly to ensure that that you are prepared to enter the classroom with confidence and that you secure a great teaching job.

How does the program work?

Over the course of the program, you will gradually build your skills, beginning first as a full-time teacher-in-residence supporting a lead classroom teacher. As you progress during the first year, you’ll steadily gain responsibility leading small groups of students and delivering parts of lessons, until you are ready to instruct a whole class of students for extended periods of time. Once you successfully complete the first year of the program, you’ll receive support finding a position as a fully licensed lead teacher.

Throughout your two-year experience, you’ll receive focused support from faculty and a dedicated Resident Advisor at your school. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in “deliberate practice,” an intensive form of focused practice that has been proven to help experts — from concert musicians to professional athletes — develop complex skills. You’ll complete the program with two years of full-time work experience, a toolkit of professional skills, teaching certification, and a master’s degree in teaching.
